Privacy Policy
Effective 24 October 2026
This policy explains what Disco Volante Labs LLC ("we", "us") collects when you use Splitz on iPhone, iPad, and Android and visit trysplitz.com, why we collect it, who receives it, how long we keep it, and the choices you have.
Who We Are
Splitz is made by Disco Volante Labs LLC, San Francisco, California, USA. We're responsible for your personal information (the "controller" under laws such as the GDPR). Contact us at support@discovolantelabs.com.
Using Splitz While Signed Out
You can scan a receipt, split it, and request payment without signing in. Receipts you scan are read by on-device text recognition and saved only on your phone. We receive something only when you send a PDF or web page to be read (see AI Reading) or join a receipt someone shares with you (see Joining a Receipt). A random install ID identifies your phone for these. Ads and analytics still apply, as described below.
What We Collect, and Why
When you sign in and use groups or other features that sync, we collect:
- Account: Your email address, display name, password (stored only as a hash) if you set one, and your Apple or Google sign-in identifier, to create your account, sign you in, and contact you about it. Your @handle, profile photo, settings, and payment handles (Venmo, Cash App, PayPal) let people find you and pay you.
- Devices and Sign-Ins: Device type, operating system and app version, IP address, push notification token, and a random install ID, to keep you signed in, send notifications, and protect your account.
- Groups, Friends, and Expenses: Groups and their members, expenses and their items, payments you record, recurring bills, comments, edit history, friends, and invitations, to provide the service and keep every member's records in sync.
- Information Others Give Us About You: The name, @handle, or email address someone enters to add you to a group or invite you, so they can split with you. If you aren't on Splitz, we email you their invitation.
- Receipts and Photos: Receipts you save to an expense, receipt photos you attach, and your profile photo, so the people you split with see the same details. While you're signed in, receipts saved on your phone and their photos are also kept in your account, so you have them on any phone you sign in on. Only you see them.
- Imported Receipts and Bills: Emails you forward to your Splitz address and files, text, or links you share to Splitz, to fill in an expense for you to review.
- Approvals and Reports: Expenses you send someone to approve, and comments, photos, or people you report with your reason, to handle them.
- Purchases: Your plan, your Trip Passes, and the store's transaction details, to give you what you bought. The App Store and Google Play handle payment. We never see your card details.
- Notifications: Your Inbox of notifications, and push notifications if you allow them, to tell you about activity in your groups and bills.
- Support: Messages you send from Contact Us in the app, with any screenshot you attach, and emails you send us, to help you. A message from the app includes your app version, device model, and operating system version, and your account, so we can help.
Splitz doesn't process payments. When you pay or request money, it opens Venmo, Cash App, or PayPal, which handle the payment under their own terms.
Joining a Receipt
When someone shares a receipt with a code, Splitz keeps the receipt's items and totals, the name each person joins with, and the items they pick, so everyone at the table sees the same split. You can join with your account or just a name.
AI Reading of Imported Receipts
If you have Pro, import into a group with a Trip Pass, or unlock a receipt by watching a video (including a PDF sent while signed out), an AI service reads the receipt to fill in the expense, and you review the result before it's saved. Imports your plan doesn't cover aren't sent to it.
Help Improve Scanning
Help Improve Scanning shares receipts you correct to help Splitz read receipts better. It's on to start with. Your phone hides personal details it finds before a receipt is shared, and it can miss some. We use these receipts only to improve how Splitz reads receipts.
Each contribution carries a random contributor ID that isn't linked to your Splitz account. We keep contributions for 18 months. You can turn Help Improve Scanning off, or withdraw what you've contributed, in You → Privacy and Data.
Ads
The Free plan shows ads from Google (AdMob). Pro subscribers and groups with a Trip Pass see no ads. Google receives device and app information, your IP address, how you interact with ads, and, where you allow it, your device's advertising identifier, to show and measure ads and prevent fraud. When you watch a video to unlock something, we give Google your Splitz user ID (or, without an account, your install ID) so it can confirm you finished it.
- iPhone and iPad: Splitz asks for permission to track (App Tracking Transparency). Google uses your advertising identifier only if you allow it. You can change this anytime in Settings → Privacy & Security → Tracking.
- Android: You can reset or delete your advertising ID in your device settings. In the EEA, UK, and Switzerland, Splitz asks for your consent before ads are personalized, and you can change your choice anytime from Privacy Options in the app.
How Google uses this information: policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites.
Analytics
We use Google Analytics for Firebase to understand how the app is used and to find problems. It records usage events, such as screens opened, features used, and errors, with device information and an approximate location from your IP address. It isn't linked to your Splitz account.
trysplitz.com uses Google Analytics without cookies or browser storage to count page views. It doesn't run when your browser sends a Do Not Track signal, and invite codes are removed before anything is recorded.
Legal Bases
In the EEA, UK, and Switzerland, we rely on:
- Contract: To provide your account, groups, imports, receipts you join, notifications, and purchases.
- Legitimate Interests: To keep Splitz secure and prevent fraud and abuse, keep shared group records accurate for other members, improve the app with analytics and Help Improve Scanning (which you can turn off anytime), and show non-personalized ads on the Free plan.
- Consent: For personalized ads, push notifications, and camera and photo access. You can withdraw it anytime.
- Legal Obligation: To keep purchase records and answer lawful requests.
We don't make automated decisions that have legal or similarly significant effects on you.
Who We Share Information With
- People in Splitz: Members of a group see its expenses, payments, comments, receipts, and photos, and each member's display name, @handle, profile photo, and payment handles. Friends see what you share with them. Anyone with an invite link can see the group's name, the inviter's first name, the number of members, and the invited person's balance.
- Service providers that process information only on our behalf: cloud hosting and storage providers, an email delivery service, a push notification service, a subscription management service, and an AI service that reads receipts you choose to import.
- Google, for ads and analytics, as described above.
- Apple and Google, as the app stores and, if you use them, as sign-in providers.
- Legal and Safety: When the law requires it, or to protect the rights, safety, or property of our users, the public, or us.
- Business Transfers: As part of a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets, under this policy.
We don't sell your personal information. Some US state laws treat ads personalized with your advertising identifier as "sharing" or "targeted advertising". You can opt out as described under Ads.
International Transfers
We're based in the United States and process information there and wherever our service providers operate, using safeguards such as the European Commission's Standard Contractual Clauses where the law requires them.
How Long We Keep Information
We keep your information until you delete it or delete your account, except as noted here:
- Your Account: If you delete it, it's erased 30 days after your request. We keep limited information after that, such as the email address it used and a record that it was erased, to prevent abuse and keep it erased.
- Shared Group Records: Kept for the group's other members after you leave or delete your account, with your share under your name.
- Receipt Photos on the Free Plan: Removed 90 days after the later of the expense date and the upload, unless Pro or a Trip Pass covers them. The expense and its items stay. Photos of receipts kept in your account are removed 90 days after the upload unless you have Pro.
- Help Improve Scanning Contributions: 18 months, or until you withdraw them.
- Security records, such as IP addresses and sign-in history: up to one year.
- Notifications in the App: One year.
- Download My Data Files: 7 days.
- Purchase Records: Kept, including after you delete your account, as the law requires.
- Analytics: For a limited period under Google's retention settings.
- Backups are deleted on a regular schedule.
Information on your phone stays until you delete it or uninstall Splitz.
Deleting and Exporting Your Data
- Delete Your Account: In the app, go to You → Account and Sign-In → Delete Account. You're signed out right away, and you can cancel by signing in within 30 days. After that, your account and personal data are erased. Expenses you shared with a group stay for the other members, shown under your name, and purchase records are kept as the law requires. Deleting your account doesn't cancel a subscription. Cancel it in the App Store or Google Play.
- Without the App: See Delete Your Account.
- Download Your Data: In the app, go to You → Privacy and Data → Download My Data. We email you a link to a ZIP of spreadsheets plus a full data file.
Your Rights
Depending on where you live, you can ask to access, correct, delete, or get a copy of your personal information, to restrict or object to how we use it, and to withdraw consent. You can do much of this in the app, by editing your profile or using Download My Data or Delete Account, and you can opt out of personalized ads as described under Ads.
- EEA, UK, and Switzerland: You can also complain to your local data protection authority.
- California and other US states with privacy laws: you can also opt out of the "sale" or "sharing" of personal information and of targeted advertising. We don't sell personal information. We won't treat you differently for using your rights. You can use an authorized agent, and you can appeal our decision by replying to it.
To make a request, email support@discovolantelabs.com from the address on your account. We respond within the time the law requires.
Children
Splitz isn't for children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect their personal information. If you believe a child has given us personal information, email us and we'll delete it.
Changes to This Policy
If we change this policy, we'll update the date at the top. If a change is significant, we'll let you know before it takes effect.
