How can we help?

Answers about receipts, groups, settling up, and your account.

Getting Started

What Is Splitz?

Splitz splits bills. Scan a receipt, assign each item to whoever had it, and everyone’s share is worked out with tax, tip, and fees included. Groups keep a running balance for trips, roommates, and regular dinners, and Splitz suggests the fewest payments to settle up. It’s free to download on iPhone and Android.

When Do I Need to Sign In?

For groups, friends, and anything that syncs. Sign in with Apple, Google, or email. Receipts you split while signed out stay on your phone.

What If Someone Doesn’t Have Splitz?

One person can scan the receipt and send everyone their total. People at the table who download Splitz can claim their own items with Let Everyone Claim. In a group, you can add people who aren’t on Splitz by name, and what they owe is kept under that name until they join. Groups work best when everyone has the app and an account.

Groups and Friends

How Do I Start a Group?

On Groups, tap New Group, give it a name and a currency, add people, and tap Create Group. To add more people later, open the group and tap Invite: add friends, contacts, or names, or use Share Invite Link or Show QR Code. On Free, you can have 3 active groups that you created. Groups you join and groups you’ve archived don’t count.

How Do I Join a Group With a Link?

Tap the invite link someone sent you, and Splitz shows you the group before you join. You can also go to Groups, tap Join With a Link, and paste the link or its code. If someone shows you a group’s QR code, scan it with your phone’s camera or with Splitz (Find Friends → Scan). Both open the invite. If a link has stopped working, ask for a new one.

How Do I Add Someone Who Isn’t on Splitz?

Open the group, tap Invite, type their name, and add them. They show as “Not on Splitz yet” and can still have expenses, shares, and payments. To bring them in, tap them on the People tab and tap Invite: when they join with that link, everything recorded under their name becomes theirs. If they joined separately, tap the name you added and use Same Person As… to combine the two.

How Do I Import a Group From Splitwise?

Splitwise’s mobile apps can’t export, so start on splitwise.com: open the group, choose Settings → Export as Spreadsheet, and save the CSV file. In Splitz, go to Groups, tap Import from Splitwise, and choose the file. Check the import, then match each person from Splitwise to someone in Splitz or keep them as a new name. New people can join later from an invite and keep their history. Nothing is imported until you’ve checked it. It’s one group per file, up to 5 MB, and the group counts toward Free’s 3 active groups.

How Do I Add a Friend?

On Friends, tap Find Friends. Search by name or @username, type their email, or use My Code to show your QR code or scan theirs. People You May Know lists people you share a group with who aren’t your friends yet. Nothing is sent until you tap Add.

Where Are My Friend Requests?

Requests sent to you show up in Notifications (the bell on Home) and on Friends, where you can Accept or Ignore them. Requests you’ve sent are under Requests Sent on Find Friends, where you can cancel them.

How Do I Leave a Group?

Open the group, tap Settings, then Leave Group. You need to be settled up first: you can’t leave while you owe or are owed money. If you’re the group’s owner, make someone else the owner first (tap them on the People tab, then Make Owner). Once you leave, you lose access to the group and its history.

What’s the Difference Between Archiving and Deleting a Group?

Archiving moves a group to Archived on Groups, where everyone can still read it, and it can be unarchived anytime. Archived groups don’t count toward Free’s 3 groups. Deleting removes the group and its balances for everyone. Owners and admins can archive; only the owner can delete.

How Do I Block or Unblock Someone?

You can block anyone, including people you aren’t friends with. Go to You → Privacy and Data → Blocked People, tap Block Someone at the top, and search by name or @username. You can also tap Block on a friend’s page or a group member’s page, or tap Report and turn on Block Too. Blocked people can’t send you friend requests or invite you to groups, and they aren’t told.

To unblock someone, tap Unblock next to them in Blocked People. Unblocking doesn’t make you friends again: the row then offers Add Friend.

Scanning and Receipts

How Do I Get a Good Scan?

Lay the receipt flat in good light, on a plain surface, with the whole receipt in the frame. For a long receipt, scan it in more than one page. Splitz reads the receipt on your phone, so scanning works without a connection. To use a photo you already took, tap Choose Photo instead (touch and hold it to pick an image from Files).

What If Splitz Can’t Read My Receipt?

Everything it reads appears on Check the Receipt, line by line, next to the photo. Tap any line to fix it, tap Add an Item for anything it missed, and edit tax, tip, and fees. If the items don’t add up to the receipt’s total, Splitz tells you by how much. If the scan doesn’t help, use Enter an Amount and split the total instead.

How Does Let Everyone Claim Work?

After you scan a receipt, tap Let Everyone Claim and share the link, the QR code, or the code. Everyone at the table ticks their own items in Splitz, and you see each person’s share fill in. You can lock the receipt when everyone’s done, so only you can change it. Then tap Finish to put everyone’s items on the split.

How Do I Claim My Items on Someone Else’s Receipt?

Download Splitz, then open the link, scan the QR code with your phone’s camera, or tap Join a Receipt on Home and enter the code. Join with your account, or with just your name if you haven’t signed up, and tick what you had. You can also tick for someone at the table who has no phone with them.

Can I Add an Expense Now and Split It Later?

Yes. Tap Add Expense for Later and choose Scan, Choose Photos, or Just a Note. A note takes a title, and an amount if you know it. Each one waits in To Split on this phone. When you’re ready, open it: a receipt opens Check the Receipt, to compare the lines with the photo, and a note opens New Expense filled in. On a note, swipe right to add a photo. Swipe left on anything to delete it.

Can I Keep the Receipt Photo With an Expense?

Yes. When you split a scanned receipt with a group, its photo goes with the expense. On any expense, open More, then Receipt, to take a photo, choose one, or choose a PDF, up to three per expense. Everyone in the group can see them, and Download All Receipts in the group’s Settings saves them all. On Free, receipt photos are removed after 90 days unless someone on the expense has Pro or it was added during a Trip Pass. The expense and its items stay, and the expense shows the date a photo will be removed.

How Do I Forward Receipts by Email?

Copy your Splitz address from You → Receipts to Split and forward receipts, bills, and PDFs to it. Splitz reads each one and puts it in Receipts to Split for you to review before anything is saved. Mail is accepted only from your sign-in email and addresses you’ve added and confirmed (Pro can add up to five). Pro reads 50 a month, a 7-day Trip Pass includes 10 for its group and a 30-day pass 40, and on Free you can watch a short video to have one read.

What Is Help Improve Scanning?

A setting that shares receipts you correct to help Splitz read receipts better. It’s on to start with. To turn it off, or to delete what you’ve shared with Withdraw My Contributions, go to You → Privacy and Data.

Splitting

What Are the Ways to Split an Expense?

Equal, Amount, %, Shares, and Items, and Split by Nights for a stay, which you’ll find under Shares: set the check-in and check-out days and the nights each person stayed. Items splits a scanned receipt by who had what, and any item can be split any number of ways. Every way of splitting is free. A group can have a Default Split, set in the group’s Settings.

Can More Than One Person Pay?

Yes. On New Expense, tap Paid By, then More Than One Person. Tick who paid and enter what each one put in. The amounts need to add up to the total.

How Do I Add a Refund?

On New Expense, tap More and turn on Refund. A refund is money back, like a returned deposit: whoever got it owes each person their part of it, split the way you choose.

How Are Tax, Tip, and Service Fees Divided?

By what each person ordered. Someone whose items come to a third of the subtotal pays a third of the tax, tip, and fees. Every charge can be edited.

What Does Simplify Debts Do?

It cuts down how many payments a group needs. If Alice owes Bob $20 and Bob owes Carol $20, Alice pays Carol $20 and the group is settled in one payment. Turn it on in the group’s Settings.

Can I Use Another Currency?

Yes. Each group has a currency, and an expense can be in a different one. Splitz converts it to the group’s currency at that day’s rate and shows the rate on the expense. Balances in different currencies are never added together.

Settling Up and Payment Apps

Which Payment Apps Can I Use?

To settle up in a group or with a friend, you can pay with Venmo, Cash App, or PayPal, or record cash or any other payment by hand. On a receipt split, you can request someone’s share through Venmo or Cash App. PayPal can’t send a request for money, so it’s only in Settle Up.

How Do Venmo, Cash App, and PayPal Work With Splitz?

Open the group and tap Settle Up, then Pay. Splitz opens Venmo, Cash App, or PayPal with the amount filled in, using whichever the other person has added. The payment happens in that app: Splitz never handles your money. To get paid this way yourself, add your accounts in You → Payment Accounts.

How Do I Record a Payment?

When you come back from a payment app, Splitz asks whether you paid. Tap Record Payment. For cash or anything else, tap Already Paid? Record It, or use Record a Payment and choose I Paid or They Paid Me. The person you paid is asked to confirm, and they can tap I Didn’t Get It if it never arrived.

What Does Why This Balance Show?

Every expense and payment behind your balance with one person, and what they add up to. On a group’s Balances tab or in Settle Up, tap a name, or a payment with you in it.

How Do I Ask Everyone Who Owes Me at Once?

In a group’s Settle Up, tap Request Everyone, or tap Request All on the Balances tab. Venmo opens for each request, one at a time. Everyone else, such as people without Venmo or not on Splitz yet, is listed in one message you can send anywhere. Requesting doesn’t record anything, so record a payment once the money arrives.

What If Someone Hasn’t Added a Payment App?

If you owe someone who hasn’t added Venmo, Cash App, or PayPal, tap Ask, followed by their name. They get a notification that takes them to add one. You can ask the same person once a week.

How Do Reminders Work?

On a group’s Balances tab, tap Remind next to someone who owes you, at most once a day per person. To remind everyone who owes you once a week, turn on Remind Automatically in the group’s Settings. People who aren’t on Splitz yet can’t get reminders, so send them an invite.

Repeating Bills

How Do I Set Up a Repeating Bill?

When adding an expense, tap Repeat and choose how often, and when it ends if it does. Free includes 3 repeating bills, and Pro has no limit. To pause or stop one, tap it under Upcoming in the group.

When Does a Repeating Bill Post?

At 6 AM on its date, in the group’s time zone. Owners and admins can change a group’s time zone in the group’s Settings, under Time Zone.

What Are Smart Bills?

A Smart Bill is a repeating bill whose amount changes, like electricity. When you set up the repeat, turn on Amount Changes Each Time; the bill needs to be split equally, by shares, or by percent. On each date, a bill to enter appears in Notifications and in the group, filled in with last time’s amount. Enter this month’s amount once and everyone’s share updates, and Splitz tells you when a bill is higher than usual. It isn’t in anyone’s balance until it’s confirmed.

With Pro or a Trip Pass, a Smart Bill can post an estimate on its date and correct it when the real bill comes, or fill itself in from a bill you forward to your Splitz address.

How Do I Skip One Month?

When a bill is waiting to be entered, open it and tap Remove for This Month (or for this day, week, or year, depending on how often it repeats). Nothing is added, and nobody owes anything for it. You can put it back from the bill’s Past.

Pro and Trip Pass

What Does Splitz Pro Include?

No ads anywhere, unlimited groups and repeating bills, 50 email and shared receipts a month (forwarded emails, plus PDFs, screenshots, and links shared to Splitz), spending charts and Trip Recap for every group, and receipt photos kept for good. The yearly plan also includes one Trip Pass a year. Scanning, every way of splitting, joining groups, and settling up are free for everyone. Compare Free, Pro, and Trip Pass.

How Much Does Pro Cost?

In the US, Pro is $4.99 a month or $29.99 a year. Prices for your country are shown in the app before you subscribe. The yearly plan starts with a 7-day free trial if you’re eligible, and the app shows it before you subscribe.

What Is a Trip Pass?

A one-time purchase that gives everyone in one group Pro features for 7 or 30 days ($2.99 or $5.99 in the US), including no ads in that group, spending charts and Trip Recap, and email and shared receipts: a 7-day Trip Pass includes 10 and a 30-day pass 40. One person buys it for everyone; turn on Split the Cost to add the price to the group as an ordinary expense. It doesn’t renew, and another pass for the same group adds its days to the time left and its email receipts to the group’s right away. Unused email receipts last until the group’s last pass ends. With yearly Pro, use your included pass from You → Splitz Pro.

Where Are the Spending Charts and Trip Recap?

Open a group and tap Spending next to its Net Balance. You’ll see spending by category and over time, and a Trip Recap: what the trip cost a day, the busiest day, the biggest expense, and who paid what. A group’s charts need Pro or a Trip Pass. For your own spending across groups, tap Spending next to Net Balance on Groups.

How Do I Restore a Purchase?

Go to You → Splitz Pro and tap Restore Purchases (or Restore on the plans screen). Use the same Apple Account or Google account you bought with.

How Do I Cancel Pro?

On iPhone, go to You → Splitz Pro → Manage Subscription, or your subscriptions in the App Store. On Android, use Google Play → Payments & subscriptions. Pro stays on until the end of the period you’ve paid for. Deleting the app or your account doesn’t cancel it. Refunds are handled by Apple or Google.

What Happens to My Receipt Photos When Pro Ends?

They follow Free’s rules from then on: a group’s photos are removed after 90 days unless someone on the expense has Pro or it was added during a Trip Pass. Each expense shows the date its photo will be removed, and the expense and its items always stay. To keep copies, use Download All Receipts in the group’s Settings.

Widgets and Siri

How Do I Add the Balance Widget?

On iPhone, touch and hold your Home Screen, tap Edit, then Add Widget and search for Splitz. It shows what you’re owed or what you owe, and each group’s balance. There’s a Lock Screen widget too. On Android, add the Splitz balance widget from your Home Screen’s widgets.

What Can I Ask Siri?

On iPhone, say “Hey Siri, scan a receipt with Splitz”, “Add an expense in Splitz”, “Show my balance in Splitz”, or “Open a group in Splitz”. You’ll also find these in the Shortcuts app.

Notifications

What Can I Get Notified About?

Six things, each with its own switch in You → Notifications: New Expenses, Payments, Reminders, Friend Requests, Group Invites and Comments, and Receipts. Everything still shows up in Notifications (the bell on Home). The switches only decide what reaches your lock screen.

Can I Change Notifications for One Group?

Yes. In You → Notifications → Per-Group Settings, set a group to Everything, Payments Only, or Muted. You can also turn on Mute in the group’s Settings. Quiet Hours stops notifications between the times you pick, and they aren’t sent later; they’re still in Notifications.

Why Am I Not Getting Notifications?

Check that notifications for Splitz are allowed in your phone’s Settings, and that Push Notifications is on in You → Notifications. Also check the category’s switch, the group’s setting, and Quiet Hours. You won’t get a notification for a change made on the same phone, or for a group you have open at the time.

Privacy and Your Data

Who Can See My Expenses?

People in a group see its expenses, payments, comments, receipts, and photos, and each member’s name, @username, photo, and payment accounts. Expenses with one friend are seen only by the two of you. Being friends doesn’t show anyone your groups. Receipts you split without signing in stay on your phone. The Privacy Policy has the details.

How Do I Control Who Can Find Me?

In You → Privacy and Data, under Who Can Find Me: By Name and Username lets people find you in search, and Match My Contacts lets people who have your email in their contacts see you’re on Splitz. Turn either off.

How Do I Download My Data?

Go to You → Privacy and Data → Download My Data. Splitz emails a link to a copy of your data to your account’s email address, so the address needs to be verified first. For one group, Export as CSV and Download All Receipts are in the group’s Settings.

Can I Turn Off Analytics?

Yes. In You → Privacy and Data, turn off Analytics. It shares how you use the app to help improve Splitz. The setting is for this phone.

Why Do I See Ads?

The Free plan is supported by ads. Pro removes them everywhere, and a Trip Pass removes them for everyone in its group. Where the law requires a choice about personalized ads, Ad Choices appears in You → Privacy and Data. On iPhone, you can also change tracking in Settings → Privacy & Security → Tracking.

How Do I Delete My Account?

Go to You → Account and Sign-In → Delete Account. You’re signed out right away, and signing back in within 30 days undoes it. Groups keep their history, with your name on past expenses. Deleting your account doesn’t cancel a Pro subscription, so cancel that in the App Store or Google Play. If you can’t use the app, see Delete Your Account.

Your Account

How Do I Sign In?

Choose Continue With Apple, Continue With Google, or Continue With Email. With email, Splitz sends you a code, so no password is needed, though you can add one in You → Account and Sign-In. You can link more sign-in methods there too, and sign out of other devices under Devices.

How Do I Change My Email?

Go to You → Account and Sign-In → Email → Change Email. Splitz sends a code to the new address to make sure it’s yours, and lets your old address know too. If you signed in with Apple and hid your email, it shows as hidden by Apple.

How Do I Change My Username or Photo?

On You, tap Edit. Usernames can use letters, numbers, and hyphens. After a change, you’ll need to wait a while before changing it again, and Splitz shows the date. Tap Choose Photo or Remove Photo to change your profile photo.

How Do I Change the Language?

Splitz follows your phone’s language: English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, or Portuguese. To use a different language for Splitz only, on iPhone go to Settings → Apps → Splitz → Language (You → Language takes you there). On Android, use the app language setting for Splitz in your phone’s Settings.

Does Splitz Work Offline?

Mostly. You can scan and split receipts with no connection, and you can add and edit group expenses: they show “Waiting to sync” and go through when you’re back online. Some things, like creating or joining a group, need a connection.

Why Does It Say “Didn’t Save”?

A change couldn’t reach Splitz’s servers. Tap Retry to send it again, or Discard to throw the change away on this phone. If it keeps happening, check your connection, and make sure you have the latest version of Splitz.

Still stuck?

In the app, tap Contact Us (You → Contact Us) to send us a message. Choose a topic, describe what happened, and attach a screenshot if it helps.

Open Splitz and tap You → Contact Us, or email support@discovolantelabs.com.
